Resonanz
concept for the German Foundation "Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation"
in cooperation with Henningsen Landscape Architects
Berlin, Germany 2013Our proposal for the area outside the exhibition centre of the Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation Foundation takes the form of a permanent multi-channel sound installation.
A freestanding three-metre-high steel wall will be set in front of the centre's main entrance at the Deutschlandhaus as a sound box.Polyphonic choral music will be audible thanks to a multitude of small loudspeakers installed in this resonating body. One human voice will be allocated to each loudspeaker, turning the sound of the choir into a multi-layered spatial experience extending along the six-metre-wide steel wall. The piece will be composed of eight individual notes, beginning with a chord and narrowing down as time passes to a single note, until the loop is launched again with a chord.
The score for the piece is derived from current asylum statistics for Germany. The focus is on the figures for asylum applications filed in Germany, the decisions on these applications and the number of refugees living in the country illegally. Each of the eight notes symbolises a particular status a refugee may have in Germany. The length of each note corresponds to the number of refugees that currently fall into each of these categories. This gives rise to something akin to an acoustic diagram, which undergoes temporal modulation, as it is based on annually updated figures.
Data are transposed into sound and form a quiet, yet tangible, sound corridor between the entrance to the Deutschlandhaus and Stresemannstrasse. As the sound spreads out towards the exhibition centre, a topical and tonal dialogue with the historical issues addressed within it opens up.
