Residenzpflicht
10 artist's residencies in 10 new buildings for refugee accommodation in Berlin
open call 2018, residencies 2019/2022RESIDENZPFLICHT (RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT) is an internationally announced artist-in-residence program organised by msk7. The project will award 10 one-month project scholarships in Berlin refugee shelters.
The project plays with the semantic links between the idea of an artist in residence and the German term RESIDENZPFLICHT used in the context of asylum law, which signifies mandatory residence in a specific location. This twofold play on words picks up on the specific nature of flight and the need to be in an unfamiliar setting with unfamiliar people, turning the spotlight on these experiences as entailing both losing and gaining freedom and security.
Each of the ensembles of modular refugee-housing units will in turn be supplemented by a mobile module, with artistic projects organised in situ. At each of the 10 Berlin refugee shelters in the project, scholarship holders will be provided with a studio/living space for the duration of their stay.
The programme aims to use a diverse spectrum of artistic positions to temporarily open up the self-contained refugee shelters to approaches and developments in contemporary art, affording scope for artists and refugees to establish contacts grounded in everyday life, in order to stimulate exchanges of differing cultural ideas and perspectives on the spot, subsequently transporting these notions outwards.
The project scholarship encompasses use of the studio/living space located on the various sites housing the modular refugee-housing units, along with a fee and a budget for material and travel costs. Scholarship holders will also have access to the WLAN, kitchen and bathroom in one of the housing units on each site.

Open Call 2018
The temporary project was financed by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing as part of an art-in-architecture project.
RESIDENZPFLICHT is conceived as an artistic intervention. Open processes are initiated and co-designed with the project playing the role of moderator in locations that mark societal transitions.
