Sound installation as part of Aaperto: WILDE HASEN
Berlin 2008This action unfurls on the wasteland to the rear of the Tape Club in Berlin, close to Hamburger Bahnhof, in what was once the border zone so central to German history. Disused rail tracks, overgrown and seeming to lead nowhere, are now the only reminders of the passenger and freight station that once stood here.
On the freight loading platform, so evocative of a station where trains no longer stop, the sound installation "different today" rekindles fragments of memories at the intersection between narrative and history. The sounds reproduced and the texts spoken by the artists conjure up a narrative of waiting, the absurdity of normality, the past and ever-present. Rather than being defined by a quotidian railway setting like the nearby Central Station, the installation transports listeners to a fictitious world that homes in on remembrance, memory and a re-presentation of the former political border zone. From the platform, audiences experience the sound collage looking out over an open space, its sounds, full of vitality yet scarcely perceptible, mingling with the installation's audio output. In this piece, the artist group has created a poetic response to a locus of stillness in the centre of Berlin and to its ambivalent blend of the past and future.
Aaperto is a series of art events including exhibitions and studio visits organized by GoArt!. It concentrates on an expanding group of local and international emerging art talent and focuses on urban development scenes. The former railway area behind the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum for the Present, the latest hotspot of the gallery scene in Berlin, is only one example - a future 'in place' for living, working and culture. The show "Wilde Hasen" (wild rabbits) is hosted by Tape Modern in Tape Berlin. The show title is derived from its location within the former Berlin wall zone. The artistic themes presented reflect psychological, political or geographical changes and conflicts, often mingling reality and fiction.
