floating ping pong
A happening in Flutgraben, Schlesische Strasse
as part of the exhibition "Shared.Divided.United", NGBK
Berlin 2009The "Divided and Shared History" unites Germany and Korea in a special way. The two countries were both front-line states in the Cold War - and are at the same time both marked by a history of division. The exhibition highlights the diverse facets of German-Korean migration history. To this end, the works of contemporary artists are brought together and are displayed in conjunction with historical material.
The Happening "FLOATING PING PONG" takes place on the River Spree in the former Berlin East-West border zone Flutgraben. The artists' group msk7 invites its audience to participate in a ping-pong game on uncertain ground:
Friday October 9th from 21h (opening game)
Saturday October 10th from 14 - 18h
Monday November 9th to November 15th, Video Documentation in GfKFB
In the year 2006, msk7 - a group of female artists - went on the road in South Korea with their project "ping pong N-S-E-W" using four trucks and following a route from West to East parallel to the border between North and South Korea. The external surfaces of the trucks, their interiors and the ping-pong tables installed inside formed a platform for a complex interplay of linking and separating zones.
Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and three years after their experience in South Korea, msk7 is again setting out in search of the tracks and traces between East and West, North and South. In the inter-space between the far side and this side of a border the subtle frontiers and limits of communication and of intercultural understanding are blanked out.
FLOATING PING PONG plays a variation on the subject matter and formal aspects of that performative spatial investigation in 2006. In making their new choice of site the group is flagging a location assignation of an especial kind. Their project takes place on the River Spree and thus on uncertain ground. Here msk7 invites its audience to participate in a ping-pong game, challenging them to to become involved in interaction. A table-tennis table divided into two is placed half on one raft, half on another. The two rafts are joined together by ropes. The narrow gap between the rafts becomes a flexible frontier across and despite which the game must be played.
FLOATING PING PONG is a project that does without language and is nevertheless characterized by understanding and human inter-reaction.
